April
Ecolinc, the newest Department of Education (DoE) Science Centre of Excellence to be completed, is now offering a range of innovative environmental science and technology programs for students state-wide,
from primary to VCE level. Deemed 'practically complete' on 24 January 2005, Ecolinc is equipped to deliver programs focusing on three main areas - Energy, Water and Horticulture.
Ecolinc has been designed using ESD (ecological sustainable design) principles, featuring high thermal mass, passive heating and cooling, efficiency luminaires, double glazing, photovoltaic cells, solar hot water heating, and, collection and use of rainwater. The unique building is set within an indigenous wetland, created to demonstrate stormwater purification, and to provide habitat to increase natural biodiversity.
Facilities include conference and meeting rooms, interpretative display areas, environmental resource centre, multi-purpose demonstration room ideal for primary students, Environmental Science laboratory featuring an atomic absorption spectrophotometer for analysis of water samples, Horticulture laboratory featuring a range of microscopes, and micro propagation facilities for plant tissue culture, adjoining a computer-controlled glasshouse. A large shade-house, potting shed, vegetable garden and composting toilets are additional external features.
A unique weather wall displayed on the plasma screen in the foyer has been designed by the CSIRO to display a range of atmospheric data collected live from the Ecolinc weather station in the wetland. A 'Sustainability Trail' funded by the Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development (DIIRD) has been developed to guide visitors through the Centre and wetland areas explaining key features and their significance, as a background to the range of curriculum programs available.
During Term 1, complimentary tours have been provided to a range of schools and their staff to demonstrate features of the Centre and the programs offered. Bookings have been confirmed from the start of Term 2 for a variety of VCE Programs and environmental educator meetings. Interest from primary schools has been high, particularly for schools on 'camps' to nearby areas. Western Water will hold their Strategic Planning Day at Ecolinc in July.
Ecolinc will be conducting special activity programs during Education Week supported by DE&T, and during National Science Week, supported by DIIRD. Ecolinc will also be open to the public on World Environment Day for a range of community activities organised in conjunction with the Moorabool Shire Council.
