Making weather instruments

Making weather instruments

Overview

Meteorology is the science that studies atmospheric phenomena, especially those that relate to weather.  Meteorologists predict the weather and rely on weather stations, which take measurements on such things as air pressure, temperature, wind speed, wind direction, cloud cover and precipitation, to make forecasts.

Aim

To make weather instruments and understand how weather data is collected.

Objectives

  • To understand the role of a meteorologist
  • To describe the weather conditions on a particular day
  • To make instruments that collect weather data

Includes:

  • Teachers notes
  • Student activity sheet
  • Power point presentation

Five practical activities

  2. How to make a rain gauge to measure precipitation
  3. How to make a thermometer to measure temperature
  4. How to make a wind vane to determine wind direction
  5. How to make an anemometer to measure wind speed
